The KNUST Nutrition and Sustainable Agri-Food Collaborative, also known as ‘‘Nkabom’’, is a partnership between the University and the Mastercard Foundation, aimed at addressing youth underemployment and unemployment in Ghana by creating inclusive opportunities in the nutrition and agri-food ecosystem.

Rooted in the Akan word Nkabom, meaning unity, the project reflects a collective effort to transform Ghana’s agri-food and nutrition landscape through education, innovation, and collaboration. By aligning academic training with industry needs, Nkabom empowers young people to build sustainable livelihoods as entrepreneurs, employees, and leaders in the agri-food ecosystem.

Nkabom is part of the Mastercard Foundation’s Young Africa Works (YAW) strategy, which seeks to enable 30 million young Africans to secure dignified and fulfilling work by 2030. Through this initiative, KNUST and its partners are developing practical, hands-on training programs that connect classroom learning with real-world challenges and opportunities in agriculture, food systems, and nutrition.

The project brings together seven academic institutions including: KNUST, Ashesi University, University of Ghana, University of Health and Allied Sciences, Koforidua Technical University, University for Environment and Sustainable Development, and McGill University—alongside government bodies, industry players, and NGOs such as the Association of Ghanaian Industries.

Together, we are:

  • Redesigning education to make it relevant, inclusive, and impactful.
  • Supporting marginalized groups including women, differently abled persons, and displaced youth.
  • Fostering entrepreneurship and job creation within the agri-food and nutrition sectors.
